Kiddush Hashem in the Streets of Jerusalem

Last Wednesday, we experienced an extraordinary Kiddush Hashem (sanctification of G-d's name) when an Arab murderer armed with a huge bulldozer went on a rampage on the streets of Jerusalem. He flattened occupied cars, turned over a bus and ran over innocent pedestrians until his reign of terror was finally stopped by what was described as a passerby. As a result of five minutes of horror, two mothers and a grandfather were killed and scores of others injured. That "passerby" was "M", a hesder yeshiva boy on leave from a special army unit who took personal responsibility and immediately understood that he had to take action to save fellow Jews. He endangered his own life by climbing on the bulldozer, where he took a gun from a security guard and shot the savage terrorist, thereby putting an end to the ruthless killing.

This brave young hero, "M", is one of our students at the Yeshiva of Kiryat Arba. When asked how he had the courage and determination to act so swiftly, he explained that he was inspired by the valiant actions of his brother in law who killed the Mercaz Harav terrorist, and by the educational values of faith in the Almighty, devotion to the ideals of the Torah and taking responsibility for each of his Jewish brethren. He mentioned several Torah commandments that instruct us to kill our enemies before they kill us and the warning in Parshat Kedoshim not to stand idly by the spilling of your neighbor's blood (Vayikra 19:16). Any act taken to save Jewish lives from their murderers is a sanctification of G-d's name.

Unfortunately this heroic action by "M" was taken after some of the police and security personnel did not respond adequately or quickly enough to save lives. I cannot put the blame in its entirety on these security people, the blame lies with the Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and others senior officials who have created an atmosphere of trepidation, of not responding to terror immediately and fear of getting involved in terror prevention. Any law enforcement officer who uses his weapon and succeeds in deterring a crime is liable to be arrested and dragged through the courts for years. This depressing situation leads to a climate which stimulates terror and completely destroys the government's terror deterrent capabilities. For seven years the government has done nothing substantial against Kassam rockets fired on Sderot and other Western Negev towns. This inaction or "restraint" has encouraged the terrorists to continue their daily bombardment of Jewish towns. The failure to prevent aggression, and weakness of the Israeli government to secure the lives of its Jewish citizens is a result of the self degrading Israeli army fleeing from Lebanon and the crime of uprooting the Gush Katif and northern Shomron Jews from their homes in the Land of Israel.

Arabs grasp the deterioration of Israel's basic moral obligation to protect her people and willingness to yield her rights to her homeland. There was a total lack of courage and determination to initiate operations that would prevent enemy violence and deter him from daring to even think of attacking or endangering Jewish lives. The moral principle by which every Jewish man, woman and child knew that his life could depend on Jewish soldiers has always been the backbone of the Jewish State. The bravery and valor of a Jewish warrior was the pride of the Jewish people and the world revered us as well. Saving Jewish lives was always a sacred mission even if it had to be carried out on foreign soil like Entebbe, thirty two years ago on July 4, 1976. Far and wide it was known that the Israeli government would send soldiers to distant places and go to all lengths to save Jewish lives.

Yet today, in the heart of Jerusalem, the government's reaction indicates loss of all national survival instincts; our leadership has morally deteriorated by showing indifference and taking no notice of impending danger. Our leaders have become paralyzed and exhibit no willingness to fight the enemy.

The exemplary officer at Mercaz Harav and his brother in law, our student "M", have thrust a new light of Jewish pride and determination into the confused atmosphere of national life in Israel. They have restored our dignity. They have restored the deepest essence of the Zionist ideal by navigating their actions according to a map of faith and Torah values. Their sanctification of the Almighty demonstrates that only Zionism which derives its power from divine values of Jewish faith, is able to confront and eliminate the threat to Jewish existence in Israel. Only a Zionism of faith will create the motivation and courage to overcome the moral fatigue of our government and revitalize the enthusiasm and pioneering spirit inherent in our people.

This thought is expressed clearly in the words of Bilam, in this week's parsha in which we find a glowing description of Jewish valor which compares the awakening of Israel to a leopard and lion. "Behold the nation will rise up as a leopard, and as a lion will demonstrate his prowess." (Bamidbar 23:24) The commentary of Rashi explains the source of the power of the leopard and the prowess of the lion: "they rise up early in the morning to recite the S'hma, to put on tefillin and tzizzit." Our spiritual roots are brought to life by the performance of mitzvot that reveal our allegiance and devotion to the word of G-d, which gives us the power to rise up against our enemies.

The phenomenon of a Kiryat Arba hesder yeshiva student taking swift and decisive action against a terrorist murderer, thereby preventing him from taking the lives of more innocent Jews, is a direct result of the moral values ingrained in him by his rabbis. We are grateful to the Almighty who has granted us the privilege of being part of an educational process that produces such bravery and selfless devotion, that brought about a sanctification of Hashem and serves as a shining example to all of us.

Killer Of Bulldozer Terrorist Was Beaten Unconscious By Police At Anti-Disengagement
Dr. Aaron Lerner, Director IMRA (Independent Media Review & Analysis)

Makor Rishon correspondent Hodaya Karish-Hazony, reports today that "Mem", the soldier who killed the terrorist yesterday in Jerusalem, had been severely beaten by police during an anti-disengagement protest that took place May 2005.

"Mem", who at the time was 17, was beaten unconscious by police as he photographed - from the sidewalk - a protest in Ramat Gan during which the road was blocked.

Karish-Hazony suggests that police decided to beat him unconscious even though he was standing on the sidewalk and not involved in blocking the road in an attempt to stop him from documenting the event.

"Mem" was detained and released several days later and his file was closed for "lack of evidence" - a move that left a police record that made it necessary for him to have to fight the IDF in order to be drafted into an elite unit.

Yediot Ahronot reports that it took "Mem" two years of arguing with the IDF before he was ultimately drafted into an elite unit.

Palestinian Tractor-Terrorism: Mainstream Not Renegade
Yoram Ettinger

1. Hate-Education-Driven-Terrorism. The July 2, 2008 Palestinian Tractor-Terrorism constituted a precise Palestinian human-missile, guided by Palestinian hate-education, instituted in 1994 by Abu-Mazen, then Arafat’s first deputy, and proliferated via Abu Mazen’s current educational-religious-media infrastructures. K-12, and older, Palestinians are exposed systematically to school textbooks, sermons, editorials and news editions " controlled by Abu Mazen " which idolize homicide bombers, calling for the destruction of the “illegitimate, infidel” Jewish State. Hate-education (and not statements made to Western leaders and media) is the most authentic reflection of one’s ideology, vision and strategy. Hate-education constitutes the manufacturing line of terrorists. Hate-education distinguishes between peaceful and violent societies. Hate-education is facilitated by foreign aid provided to Abu Mazen by the US, W. Europe and the UN.

2. Mainstream"Not Renegade-Terrorism. The July 2, 2008 Palestinian Tractor-Terrorism is an expected derivative of a cultural-political-intellectual-educational-military environment " in the Arab world generally and in the PA particularly " which breeds lethal hatred toward Salman Rushdie the “apostate”, a European “infidel” cartoonist, the “infidel” Christian regime in Lebanon and the “infidel” Jewish State. Mainstream Palestinian terrorists accord their families with Abu-Mazen’s “Martyr Allowances.” They are commemorated by PA monuments and soccer tournaments, and idolized by poems featured on Abu-Mazen-controlled TV and radio.

3. Hope-Not Despair-Driven-Palestinian Terrorism. The Palestinian Tractor-Terrorism, along with hundreds of foiled terrorist attempts and the barrage of Palestinian missiles, have taken place during the administration of the most Dovish Israeli Prime Minister. Since (Oslo) 1993, Israel provided Palestinians with an unprecedented hope, denied them by the Ottomans, British, Jordanians, Egyptians and Arab League. Israel imported PLO terrorists from oblivion in Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, Lebanon and Tunisia to the door steps of their intended Israeli victims, arming terrorists with missiles, ushering them to the White House and according them the Nobel Prize. The Palestinian response was strikingly lucid " instituting hate education! Palestinian terrorism has been adrenalized by the hope of Israeli vacillation, retreat and fatalism. Palestinian terrorism has been energized, since the 1920s, by the existence " and not by the size " of the Jewish State.

4. Terrorism Rewarded. The 1993 Oslo Accord has been perceived, by Palestinian and other terrorists, as a reward to the role model of hijacking, global terrorism and inter-Arab back-stabbing (Egypt " 1950s, Syria " 1966, Jordan " 1970, Lebanon " 1975 until 1982 and Kuwait " 1990). Since 1993, Palestinian hate-education, non-compliance, terrorism and homicide bombing has been answered by further Israeli territorial concessions, bolstered US support for a Palestinian state and more generous US, W. European and international foreign aid. Palestinians have realized that not only can they get away with murder; but, they can be rewarded for murder!

5. Eroded Deterrence Fuels Terrorism. The Palestinian Tractor-Terrorism has been triggered, also, by the slackening of Israel’s posture of deterrence since 1993. Subordinating counter-terrorism to the “Peace Process,” has hand-cuffed the IDF, played into the hands of terrorists, undermining the cause of durable peace. Israel’s policy of retreat, co-existence with terrorism, ceasefires, subcontracting counter-terrorism to the PA (and international forces), striving for agreements with those who systematically and violently violate all agreements, and reliance on retaliation and defense has produced a protracted war of attrition, which constitutes a wet dream for terrorists and a lethal threat to Israel and to peace. The resurrection of Israel’s posture of deterrence " which constitutes a prerequisite for a successful war on terrorism " mandates pre-emptive, preventive, comprehensive offensive at the breeding ground of terrorism, focusing on the destruction of the ideological, financial and political infrastructures, which direct, feed and brainwash homicide-bombers. It requires a realization that every square inch conceded to the Palestinians has become a platform for hate-education and terrorism, serving as fuel " and not water " to the fire of terrorism.

6. Anti-US Terrorism Exacerbated. The unprecedented Palestinian terrorism since Oslo 1993 - culminating with the July 2, 2008 Tractor Terrorism - has corresponded to the unprecedented anti-US Islamic terrorism since the 1993 first attempt on the Twin Towers. The more substantial Palestinian independence, the more intensified is Palestinian and global terrorism. Palestinian terrorism was at low ebb on the eve of Oslo, catapulting to its peak since Oslo. US support of an independent state to the role-model of terrorism and hate-education has been construed, by anti-US Islamic terrorists, as weakness and reward to terrorism. As evidenced by Abu-Mazen’s education, religious and media systems, such a state would doom Jordan " a US ally " to oblivion, it would energize anti-US terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan (which was intensified following Israel’s “Disengagement”), it would provide Iran, Russia, China and North Korea with a strategic foothold in the eastern flank of the Mediterranean, it would add another anti-US vote at the UN, it would bolster terrorism against weak Gulf regimes, further destabilizing the Mideast, and it would reward those who oppress Christians in the Bethlehem area.

Terror Accountability Of The Israeli Government
David Bedein

Excerpted from:

http://www.thebulletin.us/site/index.cfm?newsid=19826135&BRD=2737&PAG=461&dept_id=576361&rfi=8

[Following the confirmation that Hamas media praised the terror attack in Jerusalem: ]

Last week, follwing the terror attack in Jerusalem, The Bulletin contacted the office of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert about the Israeli government's response to the Hamas:

The Bulletin forwarded a statement to the Israeli court from two weeks ago in which the government of Israel took a position that it will NOT garnish the assets of Hamas for a Hamas terror victim family and that the government of Israel states that it is the position of the government that the Hamas should NOT be dismantled.

In light of the fact that the Hamas praised the attack in Jerusalem, The Bulletin asked three questions of Mr. Olmert.

1. Why will the Israeli government not dismantle the Hamas?

2. Since Hamas in Gaza uses radio and TV frequencies that are owned by the state of Israel that were loaned to the Palestinians in 1994 for them to advance the cause of peace, why do you not cut off these frequencies or at least reclaim them for the state of Israel?

3. Why does the Israeli government not kill the leaders of Hamas who publicly praise and plan the murders of Jews, in the same way that the Israeli government killed Hamas leaders Mr. Yassin and Dr. Rantisi in 2004?

No answer was forthcoming from Mr. Olmert's communications office to these queries that followed yesterday's terror attack in downtown Jerusalem."
