Israel's Flag

The flag of Israel was first flown in public 51 years before the creation of the state! It was used in 1897 at the first Zionist Congress, held in Basle, Switzerland.

The basic design of the flag, two broad horizontal stripes, is based on the traditional Jewish prayer shawl, or tallit. Between the stripes in the center of the flag lies the Star of David. Both the stripes and star are a lightish blue; the background is white.

Israel's Emblem

The official symbol of the State of Israel is the seven-branched candelabrum, or menorah. The design for the menorah is found in the Book of Exodus, (Ch 25, verses 31-37). On both sides of the menorah there is an olive branch, representing Israel's hope for peace. At the bottom, in Hebrew, is the word Yisrael, "Israel."
